Event Overview

The European Championship of Robotics (ECER) 2018 took place from April 16 to April 20 on the Mediterranean island of Malta. This annual competition aims to inspire young people to engage in research and technology by challenging teams to solve complex engineering problems using robotics.

HTBLuVA Wiener Neustadt - Computer Science Team โ€œbreakโ€

I was a proud member of the HTBLuVA Wiener Neustadt - Computer Science team, named โ€œbreak,โ€ which competed against 26 teams from six nations. With around 200 participants, the competition was fierce, but our team managed to secure the Overall Winner title in the PRIA Open competition. Our robots were tasked with performing agricultural-related tasks, including collecting, sorting, and transporting objects to a designated starting position.

Achievements

  • Overall Winner: Team โ€œbreakโ€ won the Overall category at the European Championship in the PRIA Open competition, earning recognition as the best-performing team in the competition.

Botball Competition

The ECER competition is aligned with the Botball program, a worldwide educational robotics competition that focuses on engaging students in hands-on learning. In Botball, students design, build, and program autonomous robots to solve real-world challenges. These robots operate independently using a combination of sensors, actuators, and control algorithms. Botball emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), fostering creativity and innovation among participants.

Botball Competition in ECER 2018

  • The theme for 2018 centered on agriculture, where robots were required to simulate farming tasks, such as managing crops and sorting agricultural products.
  • Robots were programmed to autonomously navigate, collect, and manipulate objects, demonstrating advanced problem-solving skills and precise execution of tasks.

Impact and Recognition

Our success at ECER 2018 not only showcased the technical capabilities of the HTBLuVA Wiener Neustadt - Computer Science students but also highlighted the importance of teamwork, innovation, and perseverance. The experience was a major milestone in my educational journey and strengthened my passion for robotics and technology.
